How do you become a Bondsperson?

Before a person can begin writing bonds in Minnesota they must meet four requirements.

1.) Prospective bondsperson must be licensed through the Minnesota Department of Commerce, Insurance Division.

2.) Must be approved through the district court in the judicial district where they would like to write bonds. There are ten judicial districts in Minnesota. Hennepin County (Minneapolis) and Ramsey County (St. Paul) are districts onto themselves. The other eight districts are comprised of multiple counties, each with its own application process for bondspersons.

3.) Must be backed by a surety company. It is highly unlikely that a new bondsperson would be able to approach a surety company and be authorized by that company to write bonds. Most, if not all sureties, require the bondsperson to demonstrate experience in the business as well as financial competence before they will authorize an agent to write for them. Therefore, the new bondsperson must usually work for an established agency with a surety already in place. Midwest Bonding’s surety is the best in the business, American Safety Casualty Insurance Company through Lexington National Insurance out of Baltimore MD. 4.) Needs to be a Minnesota Notary Public.

We are currently considering taking on new agents. We welcome inquiries from anywhere in the state, but are especially interested in placing agents in Duluth, Mankato, Moorhead, Fairmont, Jackson, Worthington, and the north and west Twin City Metro counties.
